SIMS Conferences

February 18th – 20th 2008, Antigua

It is a great pleasure to announce the 3rd joint conference hosted by Boston IVF and Sims Fertility Clinic. Previous conferences in 2004 and 2006 were a great success and this meeting has now become a well established bi-annual event.
Conference room
As in our previous meetings, we endeavour to discuss issues pertinent to IVF which may be difficult to discuss at larger meetings. The focus this year is given to ‘Moving Points in IVF’ which covers a gamut of issues facing those clinicians involved in the treatment of the infertile couple. This post graduate course will address the practical issues facing the Gynaecologist and Fertility Specialist in day to day clinical practice. ‘Hot topics’ will include presentations on the future of IVF, newer technologies and quality issues.

Antigua is an island located in the heart of the Eastern Caribbean that is rich in history and culture. The climate is tropical marine with little seasonal temperature variation; average temperature is 24 degrees Celsius or 75 degrees Fahrenheit. There are 365 beaches, one for every day of the year. This beautiful island can be explored in our social programme which will provide a friendly forum for debate and relaxation.conference notes

2006 Conference

In February 2006 the 2nd conjoint meeting of Boston IVF and Sims Fertility Clinic Dublin took place in Barbados.

conference teamThe basis for these Caribbean conferences is to endeavour to create a meeting which will discuss issues pertinent to IVF which may be difficult to discuss at larger meetings.

The focus in 2006 was given to ‘Optimizing IVF in a competitive world’. We as ART providers compete increasingly both within and beyond their own regions and national boundaries. This is primarily because couples seeking IVF are themselves sophisticated consumers who utilise a wide range of information sources when deciding where they will attend for fertility treatment. These forces require a sophisticated and coherent response from us as providers and this conference was aimed at addressing that need.

Dr Anthony Walsh presented on entrepreneurship in IVF whilst Dr Richard Scott challenged delegates on competing for IVF business with Peter Brinsden asking the question – is profit a four letter word? Also on the commercial theme, Dr Doug Powers highlighted the importance of containing laboratory costs without compromising on quality and Dr Michael Alper spoke about international donor egg IVF programmes and their challenges & rewards.

conference speakersThere were a number of other topics covered such as surgery relating to IVF with Dr Eamon McGuinness presenting on reconstructive surgery and Dr Alan Penzias on the role of tubal surgery.

The meeting was concluded with an interesting lecture by Dr Michael O’Dowd on the life story of J. Marion Sims. The Sims Clinic Dublin is so named in dedication to the memory of J. Marion Sims who is known as one of the founding fathers of modern gynaecology.
